The defentiton of an American is a person who was born or has lived in the United States of America for a long period of time, and who has adapted to the American way of life. America is made up of a variety of cultures and counties all mixed together into one, this is shown by the vast amounts of kindred that each person has all around the world. The beautiful thing about the U.S. is that we can all become "Americans" while still embracing our native heritage of whatever country we come from.
ReplyDelete--- Emanuela Verardi =)
To me the definition of an American is a person who obviously lives in America and enjoys life here. But the biggest part of being an American that every person has every opportunity to be anything they want to be. A clear example of this is Barack Hussain Obama, he went from pretty much nothing to becoming the most important men in the United States. This is one of the most alluring things about America and its subsistence. Another example is every person who didn't have a chance to finish college, yet can still have a nice house and a nice life.

An American in my opinion is not some one who is an inhabitant of America because originally we came from England in search of economical and religious freedom. We are all kindred in this country because America in colonial times what a stew of different cultures. It was because of the despotic nature of the rulers in Europe that many where allured to the Americas. To be an American is to be grateful that you have the freedom that you have today because if i were not for many of the immigrants that came here we would not have railroads, buildings, and the advancements because the majority of workers in the 18th and 19th century came from another country.

An American is a person that not only inhabits America, but also contributes to American ways and pushes forward with American values. For example, a person who lives in America, yet doesn't support America in anyway, economically or socially, is not an American. If someone does not live in America, they are obviously not an American, but the allurement to live in America might eventually make the person an American. When someone becomes an American there previous identity becomes second and they are first an American. For Example a person that moves to America from Europe due to a despotic leader or something like that lets say, is now American. Only there background is European.

ReplyDeleteMy personal definition of an American is a person who loves this country more than any other. I don't believe it matters where you live as long as you love the U.S.A.. To me, it doesn't matter if you live in Washington D.C. or Bangkok, Thailand, as long as a person loves America, I consider that person an American. I am willing to consider people living in other nations Americans because I understand that some people live under despotic leaders that may not allow people to leave their country to come to America. People become Americans because of its certain allurement which consists of oppurtunities and freedom. If you love America, then to me, you are an American.

An American in my eyes is anyone who has adapted to the ways of the American lifestyle and cultures and values. My mother came to this country when she was 7 years old and has adapted into the American lifestyle and raised my kindred and I in the vein of that lifestyle. She has also pushed it upon us to value our real Spanish culture as well because that is part of who we are. There is no real definition of a pure American unless we have Native American blood in us. In all reality we are all truly just hyphenated-Americans. So deep down, the real American lifestyle is the lifestyle of the Natives, and not the despotic European immigrants who completely modernized this great country.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion an American is someone who lives in the United States, works and helps out to make this place a better country. Many people think that you are American only if you were born in America but i disagree. I think that America is an amazing country where immigrants are allowed to bring their own little piece of culture, ideas etc. I consider myself Spanish of course but also American because i came into this country for safety and for a better life and now i am working towards to make the united states a better place, i want to do something for what now is my country, my home no matter where I'm from. America allows us immigrants to put in our little piece of rice and make it more beautiful than it already is. An American is anyone who is proud to live where they do =]
ReplyDeleteclaudia <3
An American is an outspoken individual who knows what they want and when they want it. They are not afraid of change. Recent elections have shown this strong allurement for the American people. They will fight for the freedom and rights of others as well as their own. For example, when their country needed help they willingly signed up to serve for their country. Overall, an American is a strong person who will voice their opinion, even if there is no one to listen to them.

Felipe's post is absolutely exquisite. His veiws on Americans are correct in all aspects. Felipe doesn't know how to spell. For example, it is Hussein not Hussain. Felipe also portrayed some inadequate grammar. Instead of saying "men", he should have said "man" since he is only talking about one person, Barack Obama. Unless of course, he thinks Barack Obama is two or more people. That happens to be a physical impossibility, so that thought would be incorrect. Any who, if you can surpass Felipe's grammar and spelling errors, his message is one of great proportions. I applaud Felipe Vidal on his post, for it is my personal favorite.

An American is someone that contributes positively in someway to the American society. An American doesn't necessarily have to be someone that was born in the United States, it's just someone who helps the United States progress positively. For instance, someone that moves to America that pays taxes, has a job, and votes, this person is an American. Even though they weren't necessarily born in the United States, they are still an American. Now what are the people that are born in the United States, and don't contribute to the society. These people are still Americans, but in a different sense. These people should be known as American Inhabitants. They inhabit the United States, but don't contribute positively to the nation.
ReplyDeleteMy personal definition of an American is a person who holds integrity and faith to the nation. Some people come to America and say that they hate it and want to go back but they are not patriots. Yes, I understand that the definition of an American, according to the American Heritage College Dictionary, is a native or inhabitant of America, but that was in the "days of yore", which was back in the 1700's. We are in the heart of history with so many wars going on, such as the war on terror, Iraq, drugs, and Afghanistan. An atypical American would not abide by the Constitution and most importantly they would not be willing to fight for our country in times of need. I think an American is someone who is passionate about his country.
ReplyDeleteJonathon Lenett :)
An American is someone who leaves behind their kindred, without knowing whether or not they will reunite, to go in search of a better life. Not just to find a better life but at least knowing they have the opportunity to fight for a better life. An American is a person of bravery and therefore a risk taker. A risk taker in the sense that he is willing to leave something very dear to him in search of a positive livelihood. An American is a person of honor. An American is a person of respect. An American is a true believer that "All men were created equal." An American is a soldier of freedom and a protector of his brothers and sisters. An American is a person who will not put themselves in front of others. An American is a person of pride and honesty. But most of all, an American is someone who gives out of their own kindness without expecting or demanding anything in return.
ReplyDeleteSebastian Posada
Constantly, I always hear people mostly teens complaining about America saying they want to go back home to wherever they came from because the States just isn't enough. Thinking about this I've come to realize home is what you make it. Who says you have to be born in America to be an American? As an American myself with a kindred of different cultures I believe an American is a person who respects, has pride, defends their country and has to offer to it's country without wanting in return. The United States offers what many other countries do not offer, we walk the footsteps of ancient times and make history each day we live, an American is honored to live in this great land and most important is faithful and respectful not only to America but to one other. This is what an American means to me!!
ReplyDelete:)<3
Natasha Hamaoui!!! DUH!
Many may argue that an American is one who was born upon America's soil. Our country has always had a sense of allurement even from the very begining of it's creation. This country began with a single settlement of immigrants and so forth. These early settlers were drawn to the land to evade despotic rulers as well as persuing new beginings. Since then we have had an influx of immigrants from around the world. Throughout our country's history, these people have contributed positively to our society and its history. Our country was built on immigration, if it wasn't for those individuals we wouldn't be the country we are today. A man, whether he be from Asia or Latin America, has every right to call himself an American; as long as he has embraced the American lifestyle, has contributed to America's society, and has taken pride in this wonderous country. Therfore a man who was born on American Soil is an American, but an immigant can be considered an American as well.

Morgan Stewart made some sense but not much. How can an American be living in Bangkok? I don't think so.

ReplyDeleteThe American Heritage College Dictionary states, an American is "A native or inhabitant of America". The dictionary does state that as the definition, however, I think of that as more of a broad fact not really a definition. America is known world wide as "the melting pot".
ReplyDeleteMany variant people from all over the world come to America for different reasons; freedom, a better life, a superior despotic, ones choice of subsistence, etc.. The most honest way I can defy "American" is by calling it diverse. The “native or inhabitant of America” is free to be who they choose to be. Unlike other countries we can have any type of kindred; we are allowed to have intercultural marriages. Americans have freedom, we Americans don’t have to woe about being who we want to be. Every “American” is divergent from one another. An “American” is diverse.
Beverly Jaret
My definition of an American is not only that of the American Heritage College Dictionary where they define American as “a native or inhabitant of America.”, but it is also the people that help carry out the American way of life, even though they weren’t born in the United States. Among these are those work hard to achieve what they want, the ones that feel an allurement to this country since it provides them a handful of opportunities in any sense of the matter (religiously, socially, and economically speaking), and those who are servile to the United States by assisting it in order to attain positive progress. A perfect example of an American would be Gloria Stefan, famous Cuban singer who flee to the United States when she was only 16 months old due to the oppression by the despotic rulers of Cuba, for the reason that she strived all her life in order to be someone, and now she helps and holds dearly the United States in her hear; for providing her with a home, security, and the chance to come forward achieving the American dream.

ReplyDeleteI most certainly agree with Arash’s definition of an American when he states that “An American doesn't necessarily have to be someone that was born in the United States, it's just someone who helps the United States progress positively.”, because there are many of us who consider ourselves American, but we were not born in the United States.
ReplyDeleteEnglish III Honors/ 4th Period
In my opinion an American is a person that its only purpose in life is to be determined and accomplish what they want to do. Americans are people that want to make something out of themselves. They are willing to be servile and to climb up any step to achieve their goal. A true American believes what John F. Kennedy said, “My fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country." An American is a hard working person that is not selfish. They always give it their all!
ReplyDeleteThe USA is a big salad bowl! An American is one made up of all different kinds of cultures. Since the United States was founded with all types of immigrants, no one can say that one race dominates or is superior. An American is a hard worker aware of his or her roots of their kindered and one who is allured by the liberties in America. For example, an American is proud to stand up and fight for their country. Also, an American is one who lives in the most prosperous land in the history of the world. Because an American isn't a particular person from a particular place, a sense of generosity is created.
ReplyDeleteAmerica is a place where people with different beliefs, opinions, and backgrounds all come together to form a strong nation. An American is someone that was born in the United States, or is an immigrant that left a kindred in their native country and moved to the United States looking for a better life. The reason why people immigrated to the United States may differ, it can be because of a despotic government or maybe they are looking for a better education. It doesn’t matter as long as they are making America a better place. Therefore, an American is someone that respects the American lifestyle and uses his or her values and morals to make it a better country.
ReplyDeleteJoanna Berkowitz
The definition of an American is someone that loves to live here and is willing to help it or make the country better. Believe it or not, there are quite a few people that live here and don't appreciate what this country has to offer. It's upsetting because people that live in a despotic government and in poverty would give up everything to live here. Although this country maybe far from perfect, many people emigrate here because the U.S. is more alluring than where they live now.
ReplyDelete-Tiffany Vega
I personally find it quite hard to define the word "American" due to the constantly evolving ideas on what really is an American. However I beleive an American is anyone who has lived long enough in the United States of America to experience the constant cultural diffusion; hence expanding his or her traditions by adding some other traditions obtained while in the United States of America and at the same time contributing to the colossal melting pot by sharing their own traditions obtained through thier kindred/mother country. An epitome would be an immigrant who comes to the U.S.A. and after a while he endorses Thanksgiving as much as he endorses the day of all saints or the day of the dead. Another epitome would be people who are born in the U.S.A and celebrate Saint Patricks Day which is the celebration of an Irish saint. Being an American to me is being part of this cultural diffusion which shapes the culture of the United States of America. To me me being born in a country does not mean you are from this country, because you can be born in a country but not endorse any of its culture. Such as being born in Japan moving to the U.S.A. and not caring about Japan or even endorsing some of its culture; I dont think someone who follows this example can consider himself Japanese. I beleive that if your traditions/beleifs are from a certain country then you belong to that country.
ReplyDeleteOne last thing, I do not agree with the statement in "What is an American?" that says "Where my bread is earned, there is my country." Just because a country provides you subsistence doesnt mean that is your country. Since there is a vast amount of exceptions to this statement.
-Steven Erenst
The Google defintion for an American is a native or inhabitant of a North American or Central American or South American country. I think that an American can have several different definitions. People say that an American is someone who is just born in the United States, I totally disagree. Why is America called the "melting pot" of the world? This is because we have a mixture of every single different type of human being in one big consumer nation which is called America. Other countries want to emulate Americans but come short. To be an American, you do not have to be a tyro or a veteran. An American is an American. Any one is welcome to be an American and I dont think thats its neccesary to set standards or stereotypes about what an American is. If someone wants to call themselves an American, let them do so. An American has no real definition in my persepective.
ReplyDelete-Rudy Lavecchia ^^^^
ReplyDeleteBut what really is an American? The question that bounces back and forth from one topic to another trying to find the idiosyncrasy of its true meaning. An American is that person who would do anything for his nation, America, that person who can defend their “patria” without arms, nor violence. Many people cajole not only American citizens or residents, but also people from all over the world by persuading them to believe that a true American, that the only manner a person can be stereotyped as an American is by fighting in wars such as in Iraq, or using violent actions in order to defend its country: and yes, I agree with those who follow this perspective, but that is certainly not the only trait of an American. Many immigrants that came in days of Yore have not only cultivated, but also influenced and given birth to OUR land and have loitered ever since. This, to me, is the demonstration of an atypical and abyss sentiment, this is how it feels to be an American.
ReplyDeleteVictoria Hernaiz.
I believe a true American is someone who is proud to say they are American. A true American doen't have to be born on American soil or have papers that state you are a citizen. An American is one who proudly stands up for what America symbolizes ans is allured to it's freedom and liberty. An American knows not of a servile life in this country and praises the country that gave him such a noble subsistence. It doesn't matter where his kindred are from, as long as he is proud to be an American
ReplyDelete-Michael R
An American is any person who was born in the United States or any person who has immigrated to this country, with or without kindred, in search of a more sufficent lifestyle. America has such an allurement that makes people from all over the world want to be here."Here individuals of all nations are melted into a new race of men, whose labors and posterity will one day cause great change in the world." This quote exemplifies how people of all other nations believe that by immigrating to America they will find greater opportunites and success. "The American ought, therefore, to love this country much better than that wherein either hi or his forefathers were born." It is evident that once familes have immigrated to America they will be grateful and blessed to have been given this opportunity.
ReplyDelete~Taylor C
An American is someone that not only was born in America, but has the characteristics and tradition of an American. There could be people that were born in foreign lands, but they´ve been living here for a long time and they adopted the american lifestyle. There could also be people that have been living here for a long time too but they keep their traditions and their lenguage and their lifestyle, that´s not an American. Some people are looking for subsistence and they are living and working in America, but that does´t mean they are Americans, it depends on what you choose to do, in the lifestyle that you choose and the way you look at your life. An American is that person that is kindred with other Americans, with people that settled in America and they have everything in this country, they have thir jobs, their families, their hapiness, their life in America. It is that person that feels this country in ther veins, they defend it with their lifes and they love it before any other country.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Emanuela's opinion of an American. An american is someone who lives in the US and who feels pride and joy for this country. An American would be proud to say where they were from in any part of the world and they would be happy to keep our wonderful traditions alive. Americans work to better themselves and their country so future generations could be just as proud as them to be an American. And like Luis said, a true American should be able to represent our country and defend it unconditionally.
ReplyDeleteI believe an American to be someone who was born in America, or has lived in America for quite some time. Not only living within America, but knowing what it stands for. Freedom, Independence, and Life. Like Mariale mentioned, true Americans will be proud of it's heritage, and want to keep the traditions alive. To teach the future kindred of our country the history, and hard work put in to what we all call America today. To be a true American you must subsist, and dwell in what we all stand for. Which is, togetherness, as Americans. As one.
ReplyDeletePaulina Gregory
An American is someone who has been living in America, or was born in America and consider themselves an American. Its our subsistence that makes us an American. You have to be proud of what you do and what America stands for. There are people living in America that dont think of themselves as an American. America is a diverse place with many different people but we are all one. I think that a dollar bill, an apple pie, and baseball are things that symbolize America.
ReplyDeleteDanielle Leon
An American, a name taken for granted by far too many people, has such a special meaning to me. An American is someone who has received privileges that are given by the United States Constitution; they receive freedom, happiness, and equality. Almost any person can become an American, and I think that once you are an American you will always be one. America was formed 250 years ago, and expanded its population due to people from different nations seeking that which America has to offer. To me, America is known for its diversity and how people from all different places come together and formed a new culture, the American culture. Even though people still follow their kindred customs, cultures, and values of where they or their ancestors came from, there is an obligation of being an American: to follow American values. One should celebrate the American holidays, like Thanksgiving and Fourth of July, should participate in nation wide voting, and, most importantly, learn to speak the native language of English. The love for America is something that I feel all Americans should have no matter what, and if you don’t have love for this country that truly doesn’t make you American. A vast number of people in this world have the “American dream’” that they want more opportunity, more freedom, and to escape from the despotic conditions in their countries, but what they don’t know is that they are taking on a new role of being an American. The role of adapting to the American culture, the role of raising families in America, AND the role of loving America for all it has given you.
ReplyDeleteAs I read what other people thought what the definition of an American is, I came to realize that we all have the same imagine in our head. So I would definitely agree with everyone and what they think an American is. One thing though that Danielle said caught my eye. When she said, “ There are people living in America that don’t think of themselves as an American.” I think that if you are living in America, you should call yourself an American. If you are ashamed to or you don’t want to be called an American you shouldn’t be living here.
Ashley Fuchs
An American is someonne who has pride and respect for America. They don't have to had been born in America to be an American. An American is also someone who doesn' have a problem saying that people from other countries are Americans. For example, people that go around telling others to go back to their countries, are not Americans to me. If you're an American you should be able to accept anyone, no matter where they are from. An American is not someone who goes around saying I hate living in America and that they want to go back to their country. An American is someone she seizes all of the opputunities that are given in America and are happy to live here. So many people move to America for freedom of religion, or freedom from their government, but some are never truly thankful. And if you're not thankful for the oppurtunities given, then you're not an American. Ong symbol of America is money. Unfortunately so many people in todays world are constantly thinking about money. I know that economy is bad today, but that's not what should be on peoples minds. We should constantly be thinking about family and friends, not be worrying about our paycheck for this upcoming week or month. So many poeple are looking to the future and figuring out how much money their making and stuff like that. But we need to be thinking of today and think if tomorrow when tomorrow comes. It dissapoints me to hear all that people talk about in todays generation, and their obsession with money. We should be thinking about those who don't have money and provide for them. So many people in America are self-centered and only worry about themselves when theres people in Gaza or Africa starving to death and trying to stay alive for another day. I know im getting kind of off topic right now, but i'm very passionate about helping others and am very upset about how many Americans live with their heads in the Gutter.

The Google defintion for an American is a native or inhabitant of a North American or Central American or South American country. To me this is too broad.I don't believe it matters where you live as long as you love the U.S.A. An american to me is hardworking, determined to mke them self better and takes care of their family. The first people to sail to america (pilgrims) show a great example of an American they all worked together to accomplish one common goal
ReplyDeleteI think Morgan Stewart is truly brilliant.
ReplyDeleteThe dictionary definition of an American is the following, of or pertaining to the United States of America or its inhabitants: an American citizen. Personally, my definition of an American is someone that is patriotic, loyal, and hardworking. Being from another country makes it so much easier to see what an American is, how laws are followed and authorities respected. Americans are always fair, they fight for justice, a country where children have rights and even criminals have rights that must be respected. Like Eisenhower once said, “There is nothing wrong with America that the faith, love of freedom, intelligence, and energy of her citizens can not cure.” Americans really love their country; they keep it clean, pay their taxes, and make it as organized as possible. One thing that I have come to admire about Americans is how they care for others, how they are always willing to help other countries even if it’s not their problem. Americans are like a tossed salad, a lot of different cultures have mixed, yet individuality has been kept alive. Everyday hundreds immigrants come to the United States, looking for better opportunities and seeking justice. US has one of the biggest immigration rates around the world, this is only one of the small things that prove the greatness of this country, and how most people want to be part of this greatness. Individuals sometimes leave behind kindred while trying to run away from despotic goverments.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Karina, you don't necessarily have to be born in the United States to be an American, feeling pride, respect, love towards this nation its all you need to be an American. This leads us to the conclusion that the dictionary's definition of an American is too broad.

ReplyDeleteAn American is a person who is currently living in the United States and is utterly proud of their status as an inhabitant of America. This person does not need to be a citizenship nor must they have a large number of residency under their belt. If they are proud of living in the United States, and would do anything to protect their homeland than they are considered an American. Not only must this person have pride, but the individual must portray the trait of citizenship. Citizenship includes working towards the betterment of the country by doing public service, volunteering, providing assistance to society, and enhancing the economic state of the country. If an individual does all of these and more, than they should be considered American.

Many people flock to America seeking a new life in the land of opportunity. Many are allured to America for the opportunity available here. They leave their native lands because of either a poor economy, or trying to escape the iron fists of a despotic ruler. Many of them become American citizens but many of them are not true Americans. A true American is a citizen who takes America as its first country and adopts it's customs. Someone who rejects American customs and ideals is not a true American. An American is someone who is fed by America and is willing to protect this country whether or not it is their native or adopted country

An American is someone who takes pride in the country that he or she lives in. An American appreciates all that the United States has to offer and doesn't take advantage of all of the prosperities. He or she accepts all the obstacles and hardships that might be encountered on the way to a life of freedom and subsistence. Some people who live in the U.S. take for granted the lives that they have and forget about the unfortunate people who don't have our kind of luxuries. An American stays true to their country and will do anything to keep it at its best. The United States is an allurement for many immigrants who seek to have a better life. As Americans, we open the door of opportunity for them and treat everyone as equal.

For me, an American is any person who was/is born from the tip of Alaska to the tip of Argentina. I don't really care what others have to say about this matter because it has been something I've tried to let them understand. I am from Argentina, however, I'm also an American. I was born in the American continent. Clearly, the citizens from the United States OF America have taken property of this term, which I don't have a problem with, however, I do have a problem when people don't consider me an American because I don't have a passport from the United States. In no manner whatsoever I am trying to offend anyone, but this is my opinion, and an American is characterized by many things, but we are all from the AMERICAN continent.
ReplyDelete-Lucas Baistrocchi 4th Period
An American is someone born and/or raised in America. What is America makes for a much more interesting argument. Are we referring to America as the continent? As the continent after colonization? Or are we just referring to the United States? Amerigo Di Vespucci named the whole continent America. In my opinion I am an American and yet the ideals that are considered American are not ones that really get me. Is the “American” way of life freedom, equal opportunity and definitely capitalism, yet Venezuela in not capitalists and they are American, and the same with Cuba. I was born and raised in Colombia and I am descendant of people who have lived in Colombia for centuries, aren’t I an American? I believe in more equal rights than the United States government does and I believe in equal opportunity and social Darwinism, aren’t I an American? Yes I am! The Monroe doctrine might have brainwashed people for centuries but that does not mean that the arrogance shown by the U.S is validated and that by no means mean that a person has to be proud of being an American. In the broad sense of the word I am extremely proud of being an American, in the narcissistic meaning of the word. I find this country a hypocritical bully whose views I respect but do not share. As a matter of fact, let’s add to that “definition” of an American the fact that “Americans” are killing thousands just because they do not share their views; interfere in countries that are not their business; are too selfish to try and safe the earth; do not give everyone the same opportunity, freedom and protection; child’s obesity, ignorance in important things and self-centeredness are, in my opinion, among the highest in the world.

ReplyDeleteThe denotation of an American is a person who was born in America or a person who has become a citizen of America. The connotation on the other hand of an American is a person who lives as an American. A person who sacrifices not only their life but also there time for America. Just being born in American can not define what an American is.An American is a person who has pride in there Country and is grateful for everything it has to offer. An American is a person who remains a loyal American in both hardship and happiness. You can't only take from a Country it name, American, but you also have to give by proving yourself an American. Basically, it doesn't matter if your born American or you worked to become an American by citizenship but what matters is what you do to remain an American.
MY personal diffintion of an American is someone who has lived in America for more than five yeas. It is also an attitude towards the rest of the world. The attitude of an American is a closed minded one. Most Americans that I have met do ot open their minds to other cultures and give them a try. Being an American sertaintly means you have to be born or have oved in America for 5 or more years.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Martin since I have many friends who are not from America but adopted her as their home country and others who have not becuse their countries do not allow duel citizenship, and are still more patriotic than Americans who have been born and raised in America.
An American is literally someone who is born in the entire continent of America, but in this case I can infer the question relates to the United States of America. A true American is someone who lives in America to protect it and respect it. America's true colors are infinite because it is a great melting pot of cultures and beliefs and this is why as Americans every inhabitant needs to come together to keep America strong on its feet. I consider everyone who lives in America to maintain it strong among other countries and to respect it a true American.
